    Moderators of Automatic and Controlled Processes in Economic Decision Making

    According to dual-process models, human behavior is the result of an interaction between automatic and controlled processes. Although automatic processes often lead to positive results, they can also lead to severely negative consequences. The current dissertation investigated via 4 studies the effect of self-control depletion, mindsets, framing, and preference for consistency on the usage of automatic processes in decision tasks where heuristics (e.g., reinforcement heuristic) can either conflict or be aligned with Bayesian updating. In particular, Study 1 hypothesized that when a reinforcement heuristic opposed Bayesian updating, ego-depletion would influence the reliance on automatic processes. Three sub-studies (1a, 1b and 1c) were conducted using different depletion manipulations plus controls. Although the manipulation checks indicated successful ego-depletion induction, only Study 1a found the predicted effect. It seems that the ego depletion effects in complex decision-making tasks are less robust than previously reported in the literature

    Nonlinear dynamics in the balanced two-photon Dicke model with qubit dissipation

    We study the complex nonlinear dynamics of the two-photon Dicke model in the semiclassical limit by considering cavity and qubit dissipation. In addition to the normal and super-radiant phases, another phase that contains abundant chaos-related phenomena is found under balanced rotating and counter-rotating couplings. In particular, chaos may manifest itself through period-doubling bifurcation, intermittent chaos, or quasi-periodic oscillation, depending on the value of qubit frequency. Transition mechanisms that exist in these three distinct routes are investigated through the system's long-time evolution and bifurcation diagram. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive phase diagram detailing both the existence of stable fixed points and the aforementioned chaos-related dynamics.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Improving Sensitivity of an Amplitude-Modulated Magneto-Optical Atomic Magnetometer using Squeezed Light

    We experimentally demonstrate that a squeezed probe optical field can improve the sensitivity of the magnetic field measurements based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) with an amplitude-modulated pump when compared to a coherent probe field under identical conditions. To realize an all-atomic magnetometer prototype, we utilize a nonlinear atomic interaction, known as polarization self-rotation(PSR), to produce a squeezed probe field. An independent pump field, amplitude-modulated at the Larmor frequency of the bias magnetic field, allows us to extend the range of most sensitive NMOR measurements to sub-Gauss magnetic fields. While the overall sensitivity of the magnetometer is rather low (>250pT/Hz>250\mathrm{pT}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}, we clearly observe a 15%15\% sensitivity improvement when the squeezed probe is used. Our observations confirm the recently reported quantum enhancement in a modulated atomic magnetometer arXiv:2108.01519 [quant-ph]

    Bounding Vanishing at the Central Point of Cuspidal Newforms

    The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that zeros of families of LL-functions are well-modeled by eigenvalues of random matrix ensembles. For suitably restricted test functions, this correspondence yields upper bounds for the families' order of vanishing at the central point. We generalize previous results on the nn\textsuperscript{th} centered moment of the distribution of zeros to allow arbitrary test functions. On the computational side, we use our improved formulas to obtain significantly better bounds on the order of vanishing for cuspidal newforms, setting world records for the quality of the bounds. We also discover better test functions that further optimize our bounds. We see improvement as early as the 55\textsuperscript{th} order, and our bounds improve rapidly as the rank grows (more than one order of magnitude better for rank 10 and more than four orders of magnitude for rank 50).Comment: 23 pages, version 2.

    REACT Aspiration Catheters: Clinical Experience and Technical Considerations

The key performance requirements for aspiration catheters are ease of navigation and effective aspiration. In this work, we review the clinical experience and in vitro studies of REACT aspiration catheters (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA). In vitro experiments showed that REACT catheters exhibit solid performance in navigation and aspiration. Previous studies reported that the recanalization capacity of the aspiration catheters can be influenced by the devices’ inner diameter and tip distensibility, the catheter-to-vessel diameter ratio, the negative pressure delivered by the vacuum generator, the cyclical aspiration mode, the proximal flow arrest, and the angle of interaction between catheter and clot. REACT catheters can be navigated through the vasculature without any support from a microcatheter/ microwire in favorable anatomical configurations. In challenging situations, mostly encountered when crossing the ophthalmic segment of the internal carotid artery, the use of the stentriever anchoring technique or delivery assist catheter can facilitate the navigation. Three clinical studies reporting on 299 patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy with REACT catheters were included in this review. Successful recanalization (modified treatment in cerebral ischemia score 2b–3) was achieved in 89–96% of cases, no procedural complications related to REACT catheters were reported, and functional independence (modified Rankin Scale 0–2) at 90-days was 24–36%.
